December 8, 1997 – Shehu Musa Yar’Adua died in detention at the age of 54. Yar’Adua had been imprisoned by the government of General Sani Abacha for allegedly colluding with Olusegun Obasanjo and others to overthrow the sitting government. Shehu Musa Yar’Adua’s younger brother Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, would be elected President of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic in 2007, ten years after the elder’s death.
